This box has been dyed with cochineal, the red dye that was one of the treasures that the Spaniards found in Oaxaca, Mexico and imported thousands of tons of it to Spain to sell to royalty throughout Europe and beyond during the 16-18th centuries. It is still being used today, especially in Oaxaca, one of many traditional natural dyes. This one is made from the parasite insects by the same name, harvested from nopal cactus leaves. The box is 4" high, 2 5/8" diameter.
